PHUKET RACE WEEK 2005

It’s that time of the year again. Low season is officially under way in Phuket. While Monsoon rains awaken plush green mountain sides, rolling swells at several west coast beaches welcome surfers and boogie boarders. As July approaches, strong and steady breezes cool off the island and also make for ideal sailing conditions.

Phuket Race Week is the island’s newest and fastest growing annual sailing event. Conceived by Image Asia Events and hosted by Evason Resort Hotel, last year’s inaugural event was announced at the PIMEX Boat show and then kicked off to an overwhelming success.

The event entailed a week of international-standard IRC yacht racing with four distinct classes; Sports, IRC, Club and Multi-hull. Nineteen skippers and their crew battled it out in the Andaman waters off the South East coast of Phuket. But some of the finer highlights occurred after each day of racing where the evening parties at the Evason Resort Hotel ran well into the night

Phuket Race Week is quickly becoming an internationally recognized event, much like the Royal Varuna Yacht Club’s King’s Cup. But what makes Race Week special is that it’s co-organized and co-managed locally by Phuket based organizations such as Image Asia Events, the company that brought PIMEX, (Phuket’s International Marine Expo), to fruition. And the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, Phuket’s most established and active yacht club situated on the beach of Chalong Bay, a short walk up from Jimmy’s Lighthouse.

With the well known King’s Cup event in December, the recently revitalized Andaman Sea Rally in January and the laid back Phang Nga Bay Regatta in February, the timing of Race Week couldn't be better. Held during the breezy month of July each low season, it perfectly divides the long time span between races offering relief to local and international sailing enthusiasts, eager to get back in the game.

But perhaps the most compelling aspect of Race Week is its venue, the Evason Resort Hotel. Unlike other Regatta’s that change venues throughout the course of the race, Phuket Race Week starts and finishes each day right off the coast of the Evason. No more tuk-tuk rides to remote locations or waiting for transportation, when you pull your Dinghy up to the Evason pier, you are only a few short steps away from the party.

Quality Accommodations at the Evason
The Evason is a 5-star Ocean Front Luxury Resort Hotel located in Rawai in the South of Phuket. It is built on a hillside overlooking the Andaman Sea and surrounding islands where the regatta takes place each day. The venue commands stellar views over the sea, so early finishers can relax and drink icy cold beers while watching other racers making their way to the finish line. Specially discounted beer’s that is. Thanks to Sponsors such as Foster’s, you'll be able to enjoy all the first class food, entertainment and surroundings of a luxury resort at down to earth Ao Chalong prices.

The deep channel water allows Yachts to be anchored just a few meters off the Evason’s “Into the Beach” terrace bar and restaurant, where each evening’s award parties take place. Or you can catch one of the many long tail shuttle boats going back and forth between the Evason and Ao Chalong Bay 7km to the North.

If there was ever a regatta where you wanted to stay and play in absolute luxury, this is it. The Evason Resort has a wide range of rooms available for the week including special Race Week promotional rooms at the Andaman Cove Condominiums (part of Evason) located closest to the Regatta venue bar, restaurant and activities.
